Chakra, Mujer y Chocholate

The “Chakra, woman and chocolate†campaign was born under the impulse of the Network of Associations of the Amazonian Chakra of Napo and with the support of the Italian NGOs ENGIM and CEFA, the Italian Agency for Cooperation for Development and the Union European.

Ecuador is the supplier of approximately 60% of fine aroma cocoa worldwide, due to the particular geographical and climate conditions that Ecuador has the advantage of producing cocoa that has double fine and aroma connotations. < / p>

But its origin is even more special, since a couple of years ago traces of cocoa were found in pots from the May-Chinchipe millennial culture more than 5,300 years ago, which leads to think that cocoa has its origin in Ecuador.

In terms of its diversity, greater genetic diversity of cacao has been found along the banks of the Napo River (Ecuadorian Amazon).

In the province of Napo there is a millenary agricultural production system called "chakra" that practices the Amazonian Kichwa nationality that combines agroecological, ancestral and cultural management of natural resources managed under the worldview of the Kichwas, this space is led for women, as guardian and transmitter of ancestral knowledge, advocate of food security and administrator of the productive space.

The Napo producer associations, led by Kallari, Tsatsayaku and Wiñak, commercialize Napo cocoa to special markets that value the production system that involves environmental, cultural and productive issues, in 2020 a market study was developed for the Napo cocoa and it was found that the Napo cocoa (of the 3 associations) is already positioned in special markets that "value the environmental issue and fair trade", where the differentiating factor is the issue of chakra and women, they still exist processes to improve quality so that they can access a special “niche†market based on three points: 1) Quality and Consistency 2) Transparency 3) Sustainability and the Chakra system.

With this plus that Napo's Amazonian cocoa has, organizations begin to generate added value to their products in order to strengthen their value chains and shorten the gap between producer and final consumer, in addition to generating income and promoting the both internal and external consumption of chocolate with natural ingredients.

The "Chakra, woman and chocolate" campaign has the objective of promoting these elements and being visualized in a comprehensive manner, locally and internationally, and both producers and consumers recognize the advantage of having and consuming fine and aromatic chocolate, a chocolate made with the best cocoa in the world, because behind each cocoa bean there is a story to tell and while they enjoy its excellent flavor they are part of this story.
